This was far from a great performance from United but, given that this was a local derby, City were even poorer. Ball managed to be their most influential player on the pitch, first somehow avoiding a straight red for stamping on Ronaldo and then fouling the same player in the box to give United a penalty. Ronaldo duelly converted the chance and give United the lead.

With 10 minutes to go Ball was rather generously adjudged to have been fouled and earn City the chance to score their first goal at Eastlands since the turn of the year. Vassell was charged with the duty of taking the spot kick and with keeping Chelsea's title chances alive. Typical of a side that had only scored 10 goals at home this season Vassell failed to convert, firing down the middle allowing van der Sar to save with his legs. When the final whistle went, United celebrated as if they has won the title, which they duelly did the next day when Chelsea could only draw with Arsenal.

Both Rooney and Ronaldo matched Ruud's 23 goal tally from last season and United had 23 different scorers so far this season, scoring 23 more goals than they did last season.

It's a funny old number.

An hour into this game, it finally looked like United's title challenge was going to falter. 2-0 down while Chelsea were beating Bolton, it seemed that United were set to drop 8 points in 12, and giving the London club the advantage prior to their game at Stamford Bridge.

That was before Everton keeper Turner spilled the ball at O'Shea's feet who glady converted to give United hope. This was swiftly followed by Phil Neville scoring an own goal as he tried to prevent Ronaldo's shot crossing the line. Ten minutes later Rooney scored against his boyhood club before Chris Eagles finished the comeback.

In the meantime, Chelsea could only manage a draw. Truly a game of two halves.

Man Utd 3 - 2 AC Milan(24/04/07)

Ronaldo gave United the perfect start, mostly thanks to Dida palming his header into the net but Kaka soon took control of the tie, scoring twice before half-time and showing just how poor United's makeshift defence was, the second goal in particular farcical with Evra and Heinze colliding.

United slowly started building in the second half and Rooney equalised on the hour. It was Rooney again who snatched the winner in the final minute with a spectacular drive.

After Richardson opened the scoring after 3 minutes, it looked as if United were going to take all 3 points and cement their position at the top of the league. However, Viduka equalised just before half-time, heading in a cross that the injured Ferdinand couldn't cut out. Ferdinand finally went off at half-time, adding to United's defensive crisis and this result meant that United had only take 4 points out of 9 in their last 3 league games. Fortunately for them, Chelsea capitulated the next day, playing out a goaless draw at Newcastle.

After the two cup games it was back to the business part of the season. United weren't at their best but were still good enough to dispatch Sheffield United with goals from Carrick and Rooney.

After the disappointment of the last 2 games, United came back with a bang. Carrick in his best game for United opened the scoring after 11 minutes. 8 minutes later they were 3-0 up, Smith and Rooney adding to Roma's misery as United gave a master class in attacking football. Ronaldo scored either side of half-time, Carrick added another before de Rossi could get Roma on the score sheet. Evra came on to score to finsh the rout and put United through to the semi-finals.

If United do go on to win the league this season, many will look to this game as the one that announced them as the champions elect. Ronaldo's last minute winner had echoes of Bruce's winner against Sheffield Wednesday, a pivotal part of delivering the title to Old Trafford after 26 years. The length of time since United's last title may be much smaller but you get the feeling that this would be just as important to Ferguson as his first.

This was one of United's poorer performances of the season and Fulham took full advantage after 17 minutes. A ball lifted over the United defence saw a mix up between Van der Sar and Vidic. The ball deflected into the path of McBride, running into the area from the right, hitting it first time, his shot striking the inside of the far post and rebounding into the net.

Fulham attempted to capitalise on United's hesitant start and would have rued not taking their chances when United equalised after half an hour. Giggs found Rooney on the left and continued his run towards the back post. Meeting the cross with the top of his boot, the Welshman volleyed the ball past Lastuvka and curled it into the net from a tight angle.

Depsite the setback Fulham continued to dominate the match, only Van der Sar and the cross bar denying Davies and Radzinski early in the second half. United refused to settle for the draw though and battled until the end. With only minutes left to go, Ronaldo received the ball on the left wing, just inside the United half. Charging forward, he beat both Volz and Dempsey before cutting inside and shooting. The shot may have took a slight deflection but nothing was going to sour United's celebrations.

Lille 0 - 1 Man Utd (20/02/07)

This was like the plot of a Sylvester Stallone film; the aging champion, supposedly past their best and living on former glories pitted in a re-match against the young upstart who had bloodied their nose a year previously. And while the action on the pitch was far from the action you'd expect to see on the sliver screen, it was none the less an intriguing encounter.

The first half barely mustered a clear chance on goal, both teams cautiously going toe to toe, swapping possession, looking for weaknesses in defence, jabbing and probing, hoping to catch their opponents with their guard down. Just before half-time, Larsson and Rooney's hard work set up Ronaldo inside the Lille penalty area. Rapidly closed down, his shot went straight to the Lille keeper, who blocked well. Stung by the first real attack of the game, Lille responded instantly, Bodmer firing wide from 20 yards.

As Audley Harrison discovered at the weekend, it sometimes only takes one blow to finish a contest and United should have delivered it early on in the second half. Ronaldo surging into the area should have done better than to blast his shot straight to keeper Sylva, while Ronney could only manage to send the rebound over the bar. Again Lille countered immediately as Bodmer found himself in space, his shot knocked away by the alert Van der Sar's foot.

An hour in, Lille looked to have found the winner, the ever dangerous Odemwingie beating Vidic to head the ball in only to have been adjudged to have pushed the United defender to win the ball. Both teams continued trading blows, both realising the game was there for the taking.

In the end it was experience that proved the winner. With less than 10 minutes to go, Lille needlessy gave away a freekick on the edge of the area for impeding Saha. Rooney picked up the ball and placed it on the ground, barely releasing it as Giggs wrapped his left foot round it, sending it curling into the Lille goal at the far post. Sylva still trying to arrange his wall was caught flat-footed and could do nothing to stop it.

The Lille players protested, Sylva getting himself booked in the process but the goal rightly stood. At the re-start Lille kicked the ball into touch and started to leave the pitch at the request of their management. Sanity was slowly restored and the game continued, United managing to maintain their vital lead and leave them confident of progression. Previously written off many times, it looks like United may make as many comebacks as the Rocky series.

Man Utd 1 - 1 Reading (17/02/07)

Given the visit to Lille on Tuesday and Coppell's insistence on concentrating on the league, it was no surprise that both managers fielded weakened teams. The only surprise was that United failed to finish off a well organised Reading. What started as a routine run out for United finished as an entertaining cup tie.

With 3 central defenders and only Kitson up front, Reading clearly signalled their game plan. United were frustrated by Reading's organisation and lack of attacking intent and the first half saw little of the fluid football that has characterised United's season. Park worked hard as ever and got himself into threatening positions on at least 4 occassions, only to lack the composure to finish any of them. Credit does have to go to the Reading defence, who were quick to close him down and give him little time on the ball.

Solskjaer did manage to score but the goal was wrongly ruled to be offside and it looked like a dull half was to finish in stalemate until Ronaldo went on another of his runs. Finding himself running towards a dead end, he laid the ball off for the Carrick to run onto. Although nearly 30 yards out, his drive was low and accurate, flying in at the near post beyond Federici's reach.

Reading continued to defend deep in the second half, forcing United to abandon their usual short passing game and attempt to punt long balls to their forwards. Ronaldo did have several chances to finish the game, one time through with only the keeper to beat but managing to shoot across goal and wide. Reading rarely ventured forward but on one of their rare attacks, they forced a corner. Oster crossed and Gunnarsson, given too much space by Silvestre, headed the ball beyond Kuszczak's reach. It was a poor goal to concede leaving Ferguson making immediate changes to a team that should have won easily.

Larsson, Scholes and Evra all came on, with Larsson almost scoring straight away only to see his shot pushed away thanks to Federici's quick reactions. The last quarter of the game was played in the true cup spirit. United didn't want a replay and Reading saw the chance for an upset, United's nerves in the final minutes forcing errors that Reading attempted to capitalise on. Saha had a chance to win the game as he ran through the Reading defence but only managed to shoot wide when laying the ball off to the left would have played in either Larsson or Ronaldo.

In the end it finished a draw, a result that only Chelsea will be pleased about.

Man Utd 2 - 0 Charlton (10/02/07)

United made several changes to the team that beat Spurs, bringing in Park and Fletcher for Ronaldo and Carrick. It was the absence of these two players that meant that United often looked disjointed, lacking a cutting edge or someone to distribute the ball and retain possession. Charlton also offered far more here than the 20-1 odds they were given would suggest and if this was meant to be a mundane defeat, nobody had informed them.

Park blazed over the bar and Carson saved well from a Giggs shot in the early exchanges but the visitors also had good chances with Rommedahl hitting the side netting from 15 yards. Charlton battled far harder than their league position suggests and the sight of Vidic being forced off the ball by Matt Holland ideally illustrated this. The resultant throw-in gave Charlton a good chance to go ahead and Kuszczak was at full stretch to stop Ambrose's header from going into the bottom right corner.

Despite Charlton's efforts a United goal always seemed likely and they managed to take the lead in the 24th minute. Evra's attempted cross took a deflection, sending it looping into the penalty area. Park was first to react, running and leaping to meet the ball and head it across Carson and into the net. Rooney had an excellent chance to extend the lead showing his full skills, controlling the ball then lifting it over the onrushing Diawara before just shooting wide across the goal.

Charlton continued to fight in the second half and United struggled to extend their lead, lacking the fluency they normally display. At 1-0 Charlton carried the threat of an equaliser and United looked nervous. Ferguson replaced Giggs with Larsson hoping to inject some movement into the team.

Again Charlton went close, a Rommedahl free-kick just going wide of the post and it wasn't until the final 10 minutes that United finished the game as a contest. Again Larsson and Rooney linked up, exchanging passes and leaving Rooney with sight of goal. His shot was parried by Carson and as he received the rebound and was closed down by the Charlton defence, Rooney sent the ball to the far post where a diving Fletcher headed in.

United will be grateful to have been able to rotate the squad and still take all 3 points although they made much harder work of it than was necessary. They face Reading in the FA Cup in a week's time where again players will be most likely rested, ready for the trip to Lille in the Champions League.

Spurs 0 - 4 Man Utd (04/02/07)

What was supposed to be one of United's potential banana skins, particularly after losing twice in the capital already this season, saw their opponents dispatched by a generous margin and the game finishing in party spirit, with O'Shea the unlikely recipient of the visiting fans' songs.

Watching the first half would not had led anyone believing that United would finish with such ease. It was a scrappy affair and one of United's worse performances thus far. It took a disputed penalty just before half-time to separate the teams and United must have left the field grateful to be ahead. There should have been a penalty awarded at each end prior to this but out of the three claims, referee Clattenburg awarded the weakest. Ronaldo was adjudged to have been impeded by Malbranque despite trying to pull his foot away at the last second much to the home fans fury. Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot and despite Robinson diving the right way the ball had too much pace and accuracy for him to prevent the goal.

United restarted the second half with all the vigour they lacked in the first. Robinson was forced into 2 crucial saves before being beaten by a forceful header from Vidic, who rampaged through the area to meet Carrick's corner. Within minutes the lead was increased to 3.

Ronaldo cut across from the right into the penalty area, as he did for the penalty early. Lee Young-Pyo hesitated and was left standing, allowing Ronaldo to drive the ball across the face of the goal. Robinson could only deflect the ball into the path of a sliding Scholes who somehow managed to the bundle the ball over the line.

Saha came on for an injured Rooney and in the 77th minute his hard work and vision paid off as he released Giggs, who had timed his run perfectly, surging into the box and striking the ball home with his left foot.

While that was the last of the goals, the entertainment wasn't over. After making all 3 substitutions, United found themselves down to 10 men, Van der Sar taken off with a broken nose after a challenge by Keane. O'Shea took over goalkeeping duties with 5 minutes left on the clock. Within minutes he was called into action, a suicidal backpass from Ferdinand playing in Keane. O'Shea was quick to run out of the area and take the ball off his feet much to the amusement of the United bench and fans. 'Ireland's number one' was the chorus from the United faithful.

Man Utd 4 - 0 Watford (31/01/07)

The odds offered for a Watford win here were longer than those quoted for Manchester winning the bid for the Super Casino but there was little chance of another surprise result. Watford may have taken some hope from the inclusion of O'Shea and Richardson, replacing Scholes and Giggs, but unlike previous season's Ferguson's squad rotation did not case United to falter. This was not so much David versus Goliath but, as Watford manager Boothroyd had put it, Muhammed Ali against Jimmy Krankie.

United had the superior firepower in their artillery but Watford defended stoutly and even after United had made the breakthrough, it took until well into the second half before they made that superiority count. Even then, the first 2 goals were down to Watford making costly mistakes.

First DeMerit needlessly pulled down Solskjaer in the penalty area as he tried to run onto a loose ball. Ronaldo made no mistake converting the subsequent penalty as Lee dived in the opposite direction and with 20 minutes gone United were ahead.

It then took the 60 minute mark for the second to arrive. Richardson crossed from the left, attempting to find Ronaldo, who seemed well marked. Doyley attempting to stop the cross could only head the ball past Lee. After a brave fight, Watford's spirit broke, architects of their own downfall.

Larsson replaced Solskjaer and had an immediate impact. From a move starting in the United half, he and Rooney cut a swathe through the Watford side, rampaging down the middle, exchanging one-twos, with Rooney's final disguised pass leaving Larsson free to calmly pass the ball past Lee and into the net.

A minute later it was Rooney's turn to score. Ronaldo ran across the penalty area and dinked the ball over the Watford defence as Rooney ran into space to meet the ball. One touch the tame the bounce and a second to sidefoot it over Lee and watch it loop into the net.

Anything less than a win would have been a huge shock here but 4 goals increase the goal difference compared to Chelsea's. With both Ronaldo and Larsson scoring, the Ruudometer has reached its target, showing that United can still find goals after selling their main striker despite what the press may have thought.

Next target: 100 goals

Man Utd 2 - 1 Portsmouth (27/01/07)

This game gave United the opportunity to settle several questions that had recently been raised. First, it seemed that during his half-time talk, Arsene Wenger had suggested that United run out of steam after 70 minutes. Later, Wenger disputed this but it was enough to anger Ferguson. Secondly, some had started to question Rooney's contribution to the team, having only scored only 9 goals this season, and before the Arsenal game, suffering from confidence in front of goal.

So, the game was perfectly set up for Rooney to come on as sub and score twice in the last 20 minutes to lay to rest both questions, his second goal so sublime it should be used to as illustration whenever anyone asks for the definition of the word exquisite.

Rooney's efforts shouldn't have been needed but Portsmouth defended stubbornly throughout the game. Lady Luck also appeared to be on Pompey's side and until Rooney's addition, they looked to be heading for a replay at Fratton Park. First Mendes, who claimed he deserved some luck at Old Trafford after the goal that never was for Spurs, hooked Vidic's header away after it had crossed the line. Second, Larsson scored a stunning volley, only for it to be wrongly ruled offside by the assistant referee. Gary O'Neil also had a penalty claim turned down but it was one of few chances by Portsmouth, Andy Cole's spurned chance early after the restart practically their last of the game.

United's first goal came from the pace and passing that has featured throughout their season. Carrick playing yet another visionary pass that left Portsmouth flat footed, Larsson knocked it into the path of Giggs, who played it across the 6-yard box for Rooney to tap in.

The second was an individual effort, Rooney's first touch from Neville's pass perfect, allowing him to turn and run at the defence before chipping the ball so precisely that David James could only stop and watch it sail over his head and dip under the crossbar. Primus and Campbell had been outstanding for Portsmouth but there was nothing they could do in the face of such audacity.

Mendes managed to fully use the luck he was owed in the closing minutes, his powerful drive deflecting off Kanu and past the wrong-footed Kuszczak, giving the game a greater respectability than Portsmouth deserved.

The disallowed goals were particularly galling, considering their effect on the Ruudometer, but nevertheless United go through to the next round of the FA Cup. A home tie against Reading awaits.

Arsenal 2 - 1 Man Utd (21/01/07)

With Chelsea losing against Liverpool, this game offered United the opportunity to go 9 points clear and, with only 10 minutes to go, it looked like they were on target and about to inflict Arsenal's first defeat at their new ground. The first half was intriguing, if a little cautious by both teams. Neither side hide clear chances although Henry did have a penalty appeal turned down and Lehman had to be at his best to deny Rooney, touching his half-volley onto the crossbar. Larsson nearly headed in from the resultant corner only to be denied, again by Lehman.

The second-half started with the fixture still very much in the balance but it was United who broke the deadlock with nearly a quarter of an hour gone. Ronaldo played in the ever increasingly impressive Evra down the left wing, who cross found Rooney, who made a difficult header look easy. A just reward for a player for whom the goals had deserted him ddespite his best efforts.

Having taken the lead, United seem content to let Arsenal come at them and this tactic seemed to be working. Unable to make headway through the middle, Arsenal attacked down the right flank and immediately found joy. Scholes and Evra battled against Rosicky and Fabregas as the ball buffeted between the four but it was Arsenal who took the ball away. The resulting cross evaded Henry but substitute van Persie made no mistake, catching Neville by surprise and yard off the pace.

With fulltime approaching United were happy to settle for the point but Arsenal had not finished. Again, attacking down the right flank, Eboue crossed and, both Ferdinand and Vidic, who had been outstanding, failed to stop Henry from heading home. For once, it wasn't United that snatched the winner in the dying seconds.

Man Utd 3 - 1 Aston Villa (13/01/07)

If familiarity breeds comtempt no one has told Martin O'Neil. This was the third meeting between the two sides in 23 days and despite 3 defeats the Villa manger had praise for Ronaldo before this game and Scholes afterwards.

The previous meeting was a tight one with a goalkeeping error being the deciding factor in injury time while this was game was over with 35 minutes gone. There was always the fear that a manager of O'Neil's ability may be able to find a way to neutralise United after having to face them in so short a period of time, but this was not to be.

Park opened the scoring, the Villa defence failing to clear their lines after his initial shot, allowing him to lash the ball home at the second time of asking. After Carrick set up the initial goal, Park returned the favour and Carrick teed up the ball with one touch and volleyed into the goal with his second. Carrick enforced his man of the match performance by crossing the ball in the 35th minute for Ronaldo to head in his 13th goal of the season. The game was over as a contest by half-time and even Agbonlahor's goal in the second half did little to threaten the result.

Still 6 points clear, United have much sterner tests ahead of them. Their visits to North London in the next few weeks will go a long way in showing just how serious this title push should be taken while the visits to Anfield and Stamford Bridge later in the saason could be pivotal. For the time being though, they can enjoy their performance and position at the top of the table.

Man Utd 2 - 1 Aston Villa (07/01/07)

All eyes were on Sweden's Henrik Larsson, making his first start for United after a surprise loan deal from Helsinborg, but it was United's other Scandanavian that came on and saved the day when Villa looked to have earned themselves a replay.

Any questions on how Larsson would cope in England were quickly laid to rest. In the opening exchanges he was impressive and nearly opened the scoring after latching on to Carrick's defence splitting pass from the half-way circle only for Kiraly to somehow get a block in despite diving the wrong way.

Yet again, United were the dominant side but Villa resisted, allowing them the comfort of finishing the half on equal terms. United needed someone to make the breakthrough and it was no surprise that with 10 minutes of the second half gone, Larsson was the inspiration, flicking up Rooney's pass and passing it past Kiraly.

United failed to extend their lead, despite their chances and Baros, coming on as a substitute to give Villa a more attacking 4-4-2 formation, capitalised with a little over 15 minutes left. It looked like it would be enough to force a replay until United cruelly struck in injury time. It was Solskjaer, replacing Larsson, that provided another vital last ditch winner. Rooney laid the ball to him on the edge of the area and Ole's shot somehow squirmed through Kiraly's arms and into the net.

Sometimes, even when this impressive, it takes a little luck to get a result. Solskjaer and United didn't care and the 4th round visit of Portsmouth awaits.

Newcastle 2 - 2 Man Utd (01/01/07)

St James' Park is a kind venue to Paul Scholes. He always seems to score when he plays there. The first game of the New Year was no exception although the result was not as kind to United as they would have liked. Having already taken maximum points from the 3 previous fixtures over the festive period, another 3 points proved elusive, though 10 out of 12 is a total that anyone would have settled for before Christmas. With Chelsea failing to beat Villa the next night, the gap still remains at 6 points.

Meanwhile, the Ruudometer is now only 6 goals short of its total.

Man Utd 3 - 2 Reading (30/12/06)

When Alex Ferguson celebrates his 65th birthday, of all the gifts he'll receive, he'll probably be most grateful for Ronaldo's presence. In the hectic Christmas schedule 6 goals in 3 games has helped United to all 9 points and to open a 6 point gap on Chelsea. After the vilification in the press in the Summer and the rumours of wanting to move to Madrid, many feared that Ronaldo would struggle this season. Like Beckham in 1998, Ronaldo has thrived on the negative attention and, if he can maintain this form for the rest of the season, will be up there when the awards are handed out. While last season he seemed to be in Rooney's shadow, it is now the other way round. It will worrying for Chelsea if Rooney does find last season's form alongside Ronaldo.

As with the game against Wigan, players were rested and Ferguson gambled with his team selection. Vidic and Scholes were suspended, Neville injured and Evra, Saha and Giggs left out. The inclusion of O'Shea and Silvestre would have concerned many fans but, like the last game, their fears were mostly unfounded.

Solskjaer opened the scoring for United, heading in from 6 yards out. Ronaldo was the supplier, using his trickery to create space for the cross. Many teams would have faltered after conceding at Old Trafford but Reading showed why they currently lie 9th and were level after 6 minutes. Sonko headed in Shorey's freekick, United again vulnerable at a set piece and van der Sar left stranded.

Giggs came on for the second half and United attacked from the start. Chances were created with Solskjaer, Giggs and Rooney going close and it was only a matter of time before United regained their lead. After an hour Solskjaer was played in by Rooney and as his shot came off the post Ronaldo was there to knock in the rebound.

Substitute Sodje was sent off after only 9 minutes on the pitch, his second booking questionable and United took full advantage. Giggs's pinpoint cross finding Ronaldo at the far post, making it easy for him to sidefoot the ball into the net. Silvestre tried his best to ruin the party, his mistake allowing Lita to score and create a nervous end to the game.

After the final whistle blew a second cheer went up as the Chelsea score was announced. While no one wins the league in December, United have thus far proven their critics wrong and are perfectly set for the New Year. All in all it will be a happy birthday for Ferguson.

While the game featured 4 goals, including United's 50th of the season, it is more likely to be remembered for defensive mistakes than attacking flair. After only 5 minutes Distin comically air-kicked to allow Rooney to run onto Ronaldo's cross from the right and score without breaking stride. United were again dominant and outclassed City for the first half but it was only Heinze's persistance and Dunn's slip that allowed Saha to extend the lead just before half-time, his toe-poke hitting Weaver and looping over into the goal.

It was a typical United performance with their dominance not made to count and chances wasted. Isaksson, on for the injured Weaver, made several crucial saves, managing to somehow deny Rooney from point blank range. City didn't give up and when Trabelsi curled the ball in with his left foot from the edge of the box, it looked like United would rue their wastefulness and have a nervous 20 minutes ahead of them. Ronaldo spared the fans and killed the game with little over 5 minutes left, Rooney providing the pass for him to fire home.

United can take satisfaction in taking maximum points and qualifying for the next round of the Champions League since the draw with Chelsea. Although Chelsea have 3 games in which to make up the defecit before United face West Ham on Sunday, the pressure is now on them. The United players have been given 3 days off and should be the fresher of the two teams leading into the congested Christmas fixtures after which, Larsson and possible new signings await.

United like to do it the hard way. Not content with leaving what should have been easy progress from the group stages to the last game, despite winning their first 3 games, they had to test the nerve and patience of their fans by going a goal down.

It's not often that you'll hear a manger thanking the opposition for scoring but Nelson's wonder strike from 30 yards managed to shake United out of their stupour. Not that they had played that badly up to that point but the lack of tempo, urgency and willingness to allow Benfica time on the ball left them looking vulnerable and lacking bite.

With the prospect of failing to reach the knock out stages for a second year, again at the hands of Benfica, United came to life and bombard Benfica with wave after wave of attack. On the stroke of half-time they were level. Vidic charged through the Benfica defence to head Giggs' free-kick past Quim and celebrated by pretending to fire a bazooka. United left the pitch buoyant, Benfica shell-shocked.

After going behind in the first-half, United knew that playing for a draw was always going to be a risky stategy, continuing to lay seige after the interval. It wasn't long before Giggs gave United the lead, heading home Ronaldo's laser guided cross. Saha completed a hat trick of headed goals, this time substitute Fletcher providing the ammunition. Even with this lead, United continued to attack looking for a fourth.

With Celtic losing in Denmark, United finished top of their group, although with the potential opponents awaiting them, this may not be such a huge advantage. That won't matter until February and United have to concentrate on more pressing matters. City are next up and a win will see them lead the Premiership by 9 points.

Middlesbrough 1 - 2 Man Utd (02/12/06)

Ferguson may have questioned Southgate's right to manage in the Premiership but his Middlesbrough side offered questions of their own and United were fortunate to safely navigate this potential banana skin. At times this match resembled the Celtic game with United largely dominant but unable to finish the chances that they created. Such was their movement that at one point referee, Foy, was wrong footed and couldn't help but obstruct Fletcher as another disguised pass was played as the United players charged forward.

Giggs and Saha had chances to open the scoring but Huth blocked Saha's header and Giggs somehow managed to head wide Schwarzer's parry from Ronaldo's fierce strike. Regardless, United were ahead before 20 minutes had been played. Ronaldo surged into the box and Schwarzer slid in. While able to avoid Schwarzer's challenge, Ronaldo stumbled and fell, Foy pointing to the penalty spot. It was a soft penalty, reflected by the decision not to book the goalkeeper. Saha stepped up and converted the penalty, striking the ball low and to the left, just beyond Schwarzer's reach.

After a short spell where United were camped in the opposition half, Middlesbrough fought their way back into the game and Xavier powered a header onto the upright from Downing's freekick. It was their best chance of the half and were lucky to be only one down at half-time after Rooney somehow fired wide, connecting with Ronaldo's cross at full stretch.

Middlesbrough showed their intent to attack in the second half, replacing Woodgate with midfielder Morrison. Their tactical change and hard work paid off 20 minutes later as Heinze's attempted headed clearance from Downing's cross fell to Morrison, who volleyed in low across Van der Sar into the corner of the net. United's response was instant. Another marauding Ronaldo run found him on the touchline with time to pick out Giggs on the left of the box who crossed for the advancing Fletcher to head in from 6 yards.

It was a nervy finish with United unable to add to their lead and Middlesbrough refusing to give in. Ronaldo was United's outstanding player, always a threat and denied twice by Schwarzer's fingertips. His man of the match performance marred by a shocking dive in the first half, reminiscent of Pires against Portsmouth.

United will be grateful to extend their lead at the top of the table to 6 points and put another tough fixture behind them. Saha hit his 10th of the season and Fletcher bettered last season with his second of the campaign. Benfica visit Old Trafford next and by avoiding defeat United will advance to the next round of the Champion's League.

Man Utd 3 - 0 Everton (29/11/06)

While a lot of importance was placed on the Chelsea game on Sunday, it's fixtures like Everton and the upcoming Middlesbrough and City which will have more bearing on United's title chances this season. All 3 teams took points off United last season and a win against the Toffees was essential to keep United top by 3 points.

Ferguson toyed with the supporters patience and nerves, making 5 changes to the team that drew with Chelsea. Seeing O'Shea and Silvestre in the starting XI has not boded well so far this season. With leading scorer Saha rested after taking a knock on Sunday, Rooney was joined by Ronaldo in attack.

Everton battled well and it looked like United were going to be frustrated again, the changes unbalancing the team. Fortunately Ronaldo managed to break the deadlock shortly before half-time, firing in Carrick's deflected shot from outside the penalty area. Once they'd taken the lead, the result was never in doubt. Beattie up front for Everton offered very little and was poor.

In the second half Evra scored his first goal for United and killed the game off with less than 30 minutes to go. This allowed Ferguson to make further changes and left United with a central midfield of O'Shea and Brown, highlighting the current lack of depth in the squad. Despite this, United managed a third goal just before full-time, O'Shea flicking the ball over Wright from Evra's pass.

The score line flattered United who weren't at their best or full strength but it gave them 3 points and allowed Giggs, Scholes and Saha to be rested, ready for the visit to Middlesbrough on Saturday. The next 3 games are crucial with Middlesbrough and City in the league and Benfica in Europe. Champions League qualification and the chance to go 9 points clear of Chelsea are at stake here.

The Ruudometer reaches an important milestone. The 'missing Ruud' column hitting 10 goals thanks to Evra scoring. Despite his poor performances, O'Shea has equalled last season's tally and Ronaldo is nearly halfway to his target. Fifteen different scorers so far and with Larsson to arrive in January, there's a good chance that there'll be another name to add to the list.

In the words of Svennis, 'First half good. Second half not so good.'

United were the better side in the first half, playing good attacking football and Saha showed no signs of his penalty miss on Wednesday damaging his confidence. Taking Rooney's pass he managed to evade the attentions of the Chelsea defenders to curl the ball into the goal, catching Cudicini by surprise at the near post.

Chelsea made changes at half-time, showing how strong a side they are and the quality of players available to them on the bench. United were hemmed back for much of the half and, although they had several opportunities to increase the lead on the counter, an equaliser was inevitable. Carvalho met Lampard's corner and headed powerfully, Saha only managing to head the ball off the underside of the crossbar and in, preventing Van der Sar from intervening.

The result still keeps United 3 points clear at the top of the table but Ronaldo and Saha are doubts for the next match. The first team has shown that they are a match for any team but beyond the first XI there are still doubts, particularly in attacking options.

"He is the King" was Neil Warnock's post-match remark and no one could disagree. After a temporary loss of form earlier in the season, Rooney was back to his best, not only scoring twice but being involved in nearly all of United's attacks. He even had time to rival Ronaldo's showboating only for the subsequent cross to be skewed over the bar from 6 yards out by the Portugeuse player when scoring looked easier.

Despite Rooney's mercurial form, Sheffield United did not make this an easy victory. Evra gave United old boy Gillespie the freedom of the penalty area allowing him to head home. Over the last few seasons, United would have struggled to overcome such an early setback but there's a belief in this side. Before the first half was over, Rooney had evened the score, deftly bringing down the ball with his left foot before volleying into the back of the net with his right.

Sheffield United continued to offer strong resistance in the second half before Rooney scored the winner. There were two penalty claims and Ronaldo's glaring miss but 2-1 was a good result against a physical, determined side.

Blackburn 0 - 1 Man Utd (11/11/06)

Another tough game, in appalling conditions against a team that took all 6 points off United in the league last season. For much of the game, it looked like United where going to have a frustrating evening, not helped by referee Riley's poor officiating.

There were moments when United broke fast with some great one touch passing but these were few and far between. When O'Shea took to the field at half-time, replacing Neville at right back, fans must have feared the worst. However, he has a mostly solid half and it was his cross that Giggs managed to divert into the path of a sprawling Saha to convert, taking him past the half-way mark of last year's total.

Still, having scored more goals than last season, 3 points clear at the top of the table and getting points off one of their bogey teams, things are still looking good. Chelsea's visit at the end of the month is still the fixture that United's title credentials will be judged on.

With the team restored to full strength after the tampering in Denmark, United carried on where they left off against Bolton last weekend, totally outplaying high placed opposition and killing off the game in the opening exchanges. While Ferguson refused to have a presentation before the game to mark his 20 years at the club, his team paid tribute on the pitch.

With less than 2 minutes played, Portsmouth found themselves trailing to a Saha penalty after Rooney was fouled in the box. Ronaldo's stunning freekick doubled United's lead and Pompey left the pitch grateful that the lead wasn't even greater given the nature and style of United's play.

A chance to reduce the deficit was wasted before Vidic scored a third and his second of the season. Even then United continued chasing for a fourth when in the past they would have sat on the lead, the type of marauding football that typifies a Ferguson side. Even the introduction of O'Shea couldn't spoil the party.

Another goal for the 'missing Ruud' column, 35 goals in all competitions and a team playing their best football for years. Suddenly talk of Sir Alex retiring seems a little premature.

FC Copenhagen 1 - 0 Man Utd (01/11/06)

The biggest disappointment was not the loss but the number of unforced changes to the team that predictably lead to it. Saha, Giggs and Neville were already out due to injury so with the chance of qualification against the weakest team in the group, you'd still expect a strong team selection.

However, on top of Brown replacing Neville, both Silvestre and Heinze were drafted in, both returning from injury and neither fit or in form as the game against Crewe showed. Ferdinand, the cement in the back four was rested, leaving the normally solid Vidic struggling next to an unfit and often careless Silvestre. This was highlighted in Copenhagen's winner, with mistakes from Heinze and Silvestre leading to the goal.

Fletcher rightly got a start, given his ever improving, strong performances this season. More puzzling was the inclusion of O'Shea over Scholes. Carrick, still learning his role in the United midfield, was hindered by O'Shea, often trying to cover the same areas of the pitch and getting in each others way. O'Shea struggled to find United's players with his passing and even managed to miss an open goal. In a game where little midfield steel was needed, O'Shea's inclusion was unnecessary and stifled any creativity more than the Dane's midfield could.

With all the changes, there was an inevitability about the result and United looked like a team playing for a draw. Also disappointing was seeing Ole limping off with a hamstring injury. He'll be out for a few weeks now.

Bolton 0 - 4 Man Utd (28/10/06)

On paper this looked like it could have been another tough game. Bolton started the day in third, just 2 points behind United and unbeaten at home. They are also capable of taking points from any team on their day and are not to be taken lightly. United, however, made it look easy.

After waiting since the first day of the season for a Rooney goal, three came along at once. He had suffered a brief loss of form but had been improving with every game so it was only a matter of time before he got on the score sheet. Ronaldo also scored, returning to the side after recovering from flu.

This was probably the strongest XI United could field and the way in which they dominated for large spells and won by such a comfortable margin is very encouraging. Still top of the table after 10 games and 23 goals scored in the league. The only down side was Evra being stretchered off after a great start to the season.

Next up FC Copenhagen and a chance to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League.

Crewe 1 - 2 Man Utd (25/10/06)

This proved to be a tricky fixture, with Crewe coming close to causing an upset. United fielded a team of youngsters and senior players and suffered from a combination of inexperience and lack of match fitness. United did take the lead in the first half thanks yet again to Solskjaer, equalling Saha as United's top scorer this season. Crewe came back stronger in the second half and equalising midway through and unlucky not to get a winner. The fixture went to extra time and was minutes away from penalties when substitute Kieran Lee latched onto Smith's through ball to score.

So another 2 goals to add to the 'missing Ruud' column and Southend in the next round.

Man Utd 2 - 0 Liverpool (22/10/06)

This was one of those rare games where I'd have settled for the winning goal being deflected off O'Shea's arse in injury time. The fact that it was a convincing and deserved win is a bonus, especially after Liverpool were being touted as champions elect and United were meant to struggle for fourth this season, if you believed what was written in the press.

Rooney failed to break his duck since returning from his early suspension even though he was tipped as first goal scorer. Scholes playing his 500th game for the club proved to have the fates on his side and got his first league goal in nearly a year. Barring the first 10 minutes, United dominated and it was a great team effort. Fletcher continues to improve in every game this season and is showing the form that is making many re-appraise his abilities. Vidic and Evra, after finally finding match fitness and settling in look solid in defence, with Evra looking dangerous whenever he ventured forward. Carrick is still struggling to fit in but made some important tackles today and with his link up play showed glimpses of his potential. Saha was a constant threat and unlucky not to add at least one to his tally.

After Rio and Neville exchanged angry words during the game, you could bet that Rio would be making the headlines by the time the game had finished. Rather than it being a lapse in concentration giving the opposition the advantage, it was a finely taken goal that any striker would be proud to add to their collection.

Given the supposed quality of the opposition and the fear that their midfied would dictate the game, this was a fantastic result and sets down the marker that the press so eagerly asked for prior to kick-off. 26 goals already scored, and while that doesn't automatically guarantee success, United fans are in no position to complain just yet.

Wednesday sees United take on Crewe in the Carling Cup. An interesting game as Crewe are a quality side and this will be a run out for many fringe and youth players hoping to impress.

No change in the missing Ruud column but still a triple whammy as Scholes, O'Shea and Richardson add their first goals to the graph. Couldn't really ask for more although Saha was guilty of missing good chances and the Copenhagen keeper was outstanding in keeping the total down. Rooney finally looks like he's finding the form of last year and it's only a matter of time before he adds to his current total. A little bird suggests that a bet on first scorer on Sunday might be prudent.

It seems the press are slowly being convinced that the sale of Ruud may have in fact improved United despite their reservations before the start of the season as this from the Guardian suggests. 17 goals scored in the Premiership compared to 10 at this stage last season and already 4 Champions League goals better than last season's total. Incidentally, Ruud did score for Madrid last night but if you want his totals, make your own blimmin' graph.

Back at the start of the season, the big question that was being asked by Manchester United fans was, after the sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy, with no new striker replacing him, where exactly were the goals going to come from?

In a moment of Dave Gorman inspired madness, I came up with a graph that would show this season's targets, comparing them with last season's performance. Quite simply, each player had to better last season's goal tally and for every goal above this that they scored, they would contribute to the 'missing Ruud' column.

Originally these graphs appeared on the Manchester United forum on the AfterHoursFC message board but due to an administrive error, let's call him Neil, the post has now be confined to the bowels of cyberspace, never to be seen again. So, I thought, why not stick it up on blogspot, where the many fans who have recently been missing their bar charts and graphs can pop in and track United's progress over the coming season. All two of them.
